According to IBISWorld industry analyst Sophia Snyder, reduced capacity, mental health parity legislation and increased demand for behavioral health services have improved industry fundamentals during the past five years. The government has been making efforts to reduce healthcare costs by emphasizing care in community and residential settings. Additionally, managed-care organizations are becoming larger through consolidation, which has increased the price negotiating power of these companies. The net result has been a reduction in psychiatric beds. Although consolidation has been increasing in recent years, the Psychiatric Hospitals industry remains fragmented. The top firm is Universal Health Services Inc. Concentration can be particularly high within some geographic regions, since location is a key success factor; once a large psychiatric hospital has established itself in a market, it is more difficult for a small company to compete.

There has been substantial merger and acquisition activity among for-profit firms and an increase in the management of state-owned facilities by private operators, continues Snyder. Most notably, Universal Health Services acquired Psychiatric Solutions in 2010. Consolidation in the Psychiatric Hospitals industry has been occurring for quite some time. Prior to the announced deal between Universal Health and Psychiatric Solutions, both companies generated a significant portion of their growth through acquiring smaller operators. Part of the contraction in psychiatric hospitals came from consolidation in the overall healthcare sector. As managed care organizations merged in the 1990s, hospitals, general and psychiatric care alike, consolidated. This improved hospitals’ ability to negotiate with MCOs on payments and pricing.

The number of industry hospitals is expected to decrease to 516 in the five years to 2012. This trend is expected to continue during the next five years as companies consolidate, particularly following the merging of the two largest players in the industry. Although the number of companies is expected to decline, bed counts will begin to stabilize to meet demand as the remaining operators grow in capacity. An improved balance between supply and demand will weaken the industry’s ability to negotiate with managed-care organizations and governmental bodies, which will restrain profitability in the five years to 2017. During this period, operating profit is forecast to decline slightly. The favorable Medicaid reimbursement environment of recent years is forecast to come under pressure during the next five years as states look for ways to cut healthcare spending. This, together with mounting wage and supply costs, will put downward pressure on profitability in the industry. In contrast, the economy is forecast to improve, which will boost the number of people with health insurance coverage and raise disposable income. Consequently, revenue is forecast to increase. From Wednesday June 6th through Sunday June 10th, fair participants will exhibit the finest quality authentic antiquities at various galleries around the Sablon Square in the heart of the Brussels art market. Hixenbaugh Ancient Art will be located at Costermans-Antiques, Place du Grand Sablon 5.

For 10 years, collectors, scholars, and curators with a passion for ancient art have attended the Brussels Ancient Art fair. As one of the few fairs dedicated entirely to antiquities, the Brussels Ancient Art Fair offers an excellent opportunity for experienced and novice collectors alike to immerse themselves in the world of collectable archaeological artifacts. As a special event to mark its 10th anniversary, the fair has added an exhibition of Egyptian art, entitled “Ancient Egypt: Masterpieces from Collectors and Collections.” The exhibition will include 125 remarkable Egyptian pieces, many of which have never been exhibited in public before.

Hixenbaugh Ancient Art will be exhibiting over 100 desirable ancient objects at this year’s fair. Of special note is our exquisite Roman marble statuette of Aphrodite. “Empowering and engaging families in the process of care” is a top priority for Nemours Children’s Hospital.

Technologies Focused On Patient-Centered Care – As partners in care delivery, patient families will have secure and confidential access to clinical information wherever they may be, enhancing communication and follow-up with patients prior to coming to the hospital and after discharge through the use of personal health records systems.

For several years Nemours had been investigation how to better engage patients and families in the process of care. Recognizing the evolving needs and technological capabilities of patients and their families, a consumer health platform to support their corporate strategy was being sought. The following key requirements were developed through extensive family interviews: efficient and effective communication between families of patients and clinicians; ability to track key parameters for chronic and complex patients; and the ability to view lab results and appointments. Clarity Health Journal is the first product to embody these needs.

The 2011 Cluster Grant award for Obesity Research Cluster (ORC) calls for implementation of Clarity Health Journal™. Nemours seeks to better understand the utility and effectiveness of decision support messages delivered directly to the patient. Clarity Health Journal delivers a wide array of features, otherwise not available to patients at Nemours. It will also integrate with the current portal known as MyNemours.

Clarity Health Journal™ was chosen because the application delivers a comprehensive web 2.0 experience to patients including social networking and the ability to deliver messages via mobile devices. The project will engage families dealing with Child Obesity in order to better understand the use of technology to improve patient outcomes by empowering families.

The Clarity Health Journal designed as a family centric health application allows for information sharing and monitoring. It will be used by family members of patients at Nemours. Focusing on both the patient and the family is a unique approach to healthcare. Parents of children with health conditions are motivated in monitoring their health and working with the care team to foster health and wellness while lowering the cost of healthcare. The Clarity Health Journal integrates the hospital record and the doctor’s records along with personal health details to create a more complete health record.

“This pilot program will look at outcome measures related to patient compliance using a combination of a food and an exercise diary.” Dr. David Milov (CMIO of Nemours Children’s Hospital). Looking at how the family involvement can enhance the quality of health care, Nemours is working hand-in-hand with families to find innovative ways to help manage children’s health. Dr. David Milov indicated “this project will be great for patient communication, improve patient care, decrease missed appointments, decrease misunderstandings when it comes to patient instructions, encourage patient/family to have responsibility for their own care.”

Over the course of the pilot, Nemours will monitor early indicators of success with researchers and family focus groups.

The 2012 World Science Festival’s “Innovation Square” transforms a picturesque quad in downtown Brooklyn into a technophile’s adventureland, teeming with future-shaping innovations from all over the world. Watch the first public demonstration of quantum levitation; climb walls with superhero-worthy gecko gloves; play with the world’s lightest material. It’s an unforgettable afternoon of amazing demos, challenges, and interactive fun, suitable for tech enthusiasts of all ages.

Internet Everywhere: The Future of History’s Most Disruptive Technology

Disruptive technologies uproot culture, can precipitate wars and even topple empires. By this measure, human history has seen nothing like the Internet. Pioneers of the digital revolution examine the Internet’s brief but explosive history and reveal nascent projects that will shortly reinvent how we interact with technology—and each other. From social upheaval and ever-shifting privacy standards to self-driving cars and networked groceries, this eye-opening program provides a stunning glimpse of what’s around the corner.

Cool Jobs, Cool Kids, Hot Contest

This spectacular double feature shows science in a whole new light: pure, imaginative, mind-bending fun! The big event heats up as Alan Alda hosts “The Flame Challenge,” a contest that calls on scientists worldwide to give their best explanation of how a flame works–but in a way that makes sense to a kid. The excitement continues with the Festival’s ever-popular “Cool Jobs,” a jaw-dropping show that brings you face-to-face with amazing scientist with amazing jobs. Imagine having an office that’s a zoo and co-workers that are lemurs and porcupines. How about getting paid to build machines that can read people’s thoughts? Or imagine your desk was a basketball court and your clients were superstars trying to improve their game through biomechanics? Well, you don’t have to just imagine. Hear from scientists who have these jobs–find out what they do, how they do it, and how they got the coolest and weirdest gigs on the planet.

On the Shoulders of Giants: A Special Address by Edward O. Wilson

Every generation benefits from the insights and discoveries of the generations who came before. “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants,” wrote Isaac Newton. In a special series, the World Science Festival invites audiences to stand on the shoulders of modern-day giants. The second annual address in this series will be given by esteemed evolutionary biologist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward O. Wilson, who will speak about radical advances in the study of human social behavior and evolutionary biology.

Pandemic Fix: Seeking Universal Vaccines

Imagine beating every strain of flu with a single jab or wiping out your risk of some lethal cancers, HIV, and malaria during a routine doctor’s visit. That’s the promise of next-generation vaccines, and researchers are closing in on the basic science needed to bring them to reality. Join epidemiologists, virologists, and public-health experts as they share insights on the new wave of vaccine research, and the race to eliminate pandemic threats. Setting the stage for the discussion is a screening of “Contagion,” Steven Soderbergh’s chilling thriller about a deadly flu outbreak and the global race to contain it.

What’s an atomic clock and why does it keep better time when cold? What’s the relationship between speed, temperature and relativity? Through crackling, fizzing, popping experimentation, see what happens when ordinary objects plunge to the edge of absolute zero.

Why We Prevailed: Evolution and the Battle for Dominance

We once shared the planet with Neanderthals and other human species. Some of our relatives may have had tools, language and culture. Why did we thrive while they perished? Join evolutionary biologists, geneticists and anthropologists as they share profound insights about the origin of man and retrace our singular journey from fledging prototype to the most dominant species on Earth.

Stories have existed in many forms—cave paintings, parables, poems, tall tales, myths—throughout history and across almost all human cultures. But is storytelling essential to survival? Join a spirited discussion seeking to explain the uniquely human gift of narrative—from how neurons alight when we hear a tale, to the role of storytelling in cognitive development, to the art of storytelling itself, which informs a greater understanding of who we are as a species.

Spooky Action: The Drama of Quantum Mechanics

In 1935, Albert Einstein published a landmark paper revealing that quantum mechanics allows widely separated objects to influence one another, even though nothing travels between them. Einstein called it spooky and rejected the idea, arguing that it exposed a major deficiency in the quantum theory. But, decades later, experiments proved the unsettling concept correct. Join Brian Greene on a journey that brings this insight and the remarkable history of reality-bending quantum mechanics vividly to life.

Sunday at the Met: The World Science Festival Presents The New Science of Art Attribution

3:00 PM – 4:30 PM; Metropolitan Museum of Art, Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium; Free Admittance with Metropolitan Museum admission.

Art historians are increasingly turning to particle physics to authenticate masterpieces by artists like Rembrandt and Van Gogh, as well as to explore mysterious artworks lying beneath surface paintings. Join a provocative discussion about the powerful new collaboration between scientists, curators and conservators that is bringing to light hidden works and revealing important clues about iconic art.
