The company, based in Leyland, Lancashire, will service the gas alarm systems across 20 laboratories at the Life Sciences and several Departments at the University as part of an annual maintenance contract.

Tim Holmes, Managing Director of Safety Gas Detection, said: “We won the contract because we were able to offer cost savings against the existing contractor plus a higher level of service by providing more pro-active maintenance visits.”

He added: “We have a price promise that we saves customers 15% on their existing maintenance costs for one system and 20% on more than one system.

“In the current economic climate, there is some anecdotal evidence that universities, fearful of cuts in Government funding, are cutting back on maintenance of their oxygen depletion monitors, oxygen depletion sensors, and depleted oxygen alarms, and on having a regular gas detection assessment.”

The company’s gas alarm systems monitor presence or depletion of a range of gases. The most common systems supplied by Safety Gas Detection are alarms for oxygen depletion. The systems can use the oxygen measurement to identify nitrogen leaks. These are therefore sometimes mistakenly described as nitrogen alarms or nitrogen gas detectors. Besides the oxygen level alarms, the company has CO2 gas alarms for CO2 gas detection, and gas safe detectors for carbon monoxide (CO).

In addition, the company monitors refrigeration gases as well as hydrocarbons, flammable and toxic gases. Its gas monitoring systems can monitor more than one gas and can cover multiple areas of buildings.

“Our most common enquiry is for oxygen depletion alarms for users of liquid or gaseous nitrogen who need oxygen depletion monitoring for staff safety,” said Tim.

“Our systems also provide refrigerant leak detection to meet the F-Gas regulations and BS EN 378.”

One of the most recent advances in the technology is to offer gas monitoring systems, with connection via the internet, which allows Safety Gas Detection to dial into the system in the event of an alarm, and provide SMS text messages and emails to a client’s key personnel.

This means that staff do not need to enter the risk area to get to the system touch screen interface – ideal for buildings not occupied 24/7 or where it would be unsafe to enter the building.

The company monitors the following gases: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), flammable gas, oxygen, refrigeration gas, and toxic gas.

It services include free, no obligation site surveys, risk assessments, hardware installation, training, maintenance, calibration and alarm call receiving.

Its clients include universities such as the University of Manchester, University of Leicester, University of Wales Institute Cardiff and University of Liverpool, car parks and businesses using refrigeration.
